We’ve all heard the story of Rip Van Winkle. Well here in the Catskills he is more than just a story.

In 1984 William F. Hagan had a brilliant idea to bring tourism to Greene County; a treasure hunt! Based off the clues in James Hashian’s reworked version of the original story, a 9” round stone with the initials RVW chiseled into it was hidden in the Catskills.

Well my father, like many others locals, became obsessed with finding it. He would scour the books looking for clues. On the weekends he would take my brother and I along for the search. Well we never found it, but that was the start for me.

would spend the rest of my teenage years exploring the Catskills until I moved to the Southwest. That’s where I spent Twenty plus years honing my backcountry skills in Hiking, Backpacking and Hunting.

Eventually my love of the Catskills and my desire to live a simpler life brought me back home to share my experiences and love of adventure with others.

First-timer or experienced angler? Either way, you’ll experience an incredible day of fly fishing on the pristine waters of the Catskill Mountains. Crash course for first-timers takes approximately 1+ hours of trip time depending on the number of participants. Half-day trips are available with a morning or afternoon departure.

Additional notes for first-timers: Fly fishing is done in the river not from shore. We wear waders to keep us dry and specialized non-slip boots that help minimize unwanted falls. We rent waders from our shop, but if you have an unusually large or small foot or frame size, please let us know when you inquire. Boots are available up to men’s 13.

A two-hour mushroom walk with an experienced mycology educator to learn about fungi you find in the forest. We can delve deep into a particular subject of your choice or create an engaging experience for your group.

We will bring bags, baskets, books, and magnifiers that we use to find, photograph, sustainably harvest, and identify the mushrooms on your land or designated location. Are you interested to learn which mushrooms are edible or medicinal, and how to prepare them? Would you like to know about the underground network that binds your forest together? Would you like to cultivate mushrooms indoors or outdoors? We will cover these subjects and more. We can talk about the ecological value, historic uses, scientific importance, and future potential of the fungi we find.
